This was the flipside of the more famous "Bela Lugosi's Dead", which I had on glow-in-the-dark 17" vinyl, which I bought at my favorite Annapolis, MD record store, Ocean's II, which is going out of business this coming weekend. Sigh.

This is the kind of video that makes one glad that the singer knows how to wear a loin cloth, otherwise there could be a costuming incident. And although I always appreciate reddish-orangey hair, the doofy smile isn't exactly a turn-on. Still, it's an upbeat and enjoyable song.

I just watched the movie "Less Than Zero" for the first time since it same out in 1987. I didn't like it then, but I was much more impressed by it this time, probably because it was a little too mature for me when I was 16. And I don't generally hate Andrew McCarthy as much as I used to, although he still strikes me as a smarmy slime-ball. *ahem* Anyways...
I'd forgotten about this version of this song, but it was featured prominently in the opening credits:

So many of these posts are of the "because it popped into my head" variety that I think they need their own category: Brain Radio. I'm not sure what it is about our brains that allow them to do more than one thing at a time, or why many people find that they provide their own life soundtrack. Maybe the right hemisphere is keeping busy or something, or maybe it's closer to a waking dream state.
Anyways, here's what's on my brain radio this morning, the bass part to which I always liked:

It's been a long time since the last update, so we should probably change our name to monthlyeighties. But our excuse is that we've both been really slammed, since this is our busy season in University IT land, and we're gearing up for the fall semester to start. Which may have been the reason for this band to have gotten stuck in my head - my brain is fried and therefore quite simple at the moment.
Okay, that was a lame association. Sue me.
In any case, the following videos are from the fantastic 1985 album "Once Upon a Time", which I highly recommend. I wish they had made a video for Oh Jungleland. The entire album is great. Enjoy.
This is a live video, but it seems to be an official live video, so I think it's worthy. And this song is going through my head today. For reasons I won't go into.
Ok, these two are really out of bounds for posting here because they're not official videos, but YouTube-user-made videos. But I love these songs, and it really is too bad that there aren't any videos for them, so here goes.

Summer is a busy time of year for Heather and I, so we haven't been posting as much lately. I had planned to post this on June 20th, which was Duran Duran bassist (and hottie) John Taylor's 47th birthday. Alas, and alack! My Duranie devotion is marred. :(
In any case, I hope it was a good one for him, and to celebrate I'm posting his first solo hit, "I Do What I Do...", which was for the soundtrack to 9 1/2 Weeks. I remember reading in some article at the time that John was supposed to produce this song, but couldn't find an artist who could sing it the way he wanted to, so he sang it himself. I have no idea if that's really valid or my own muddled remembrance.

Being a good little Duranie, I have several of the boys' birthdays memorized, including and especially Nick Rhodes'. He is 45 years old today. In his honor, I'm posting a video that breaks all of the rules we started out with (and, well, who cares - the rules were kind of hamstringing us anyways.) Nick is the one with the bright orangey-red hair. This is the video where I first fell for him - as I've said, I really like redheads.
Incidentally, most of the video-clips-within-the-video are from My Own Way, which was a pretty good but little-known video. Towards the end there are several other clips (one per individual - Save A Prayer for Simon, Night Boat [yay!] for Nick, something I can't place that might be My Own Way again for John, Hungry Like The Wolf for Andy, and Planet Earth for Roger). This video was made after all of those with the re-release of the original eponymous album. To the Shore was left off and replaced with Is There Something I Should Know? I actually really like To the Shore, so it's too bad that got removed.
Anyways, enough of my Duranie blather. Happy Birthday, Nick - and although I never sent that fan letter when I was 13, my heart still beats for you. :)

I read somewhere that this song is a tribute from David Bowie to the New Romantic genre which had basically started up to mimic, well, David Bowie. In any case, it's cool of him to acknowledge it.

I was just going to post one David Bowie clip, but then I kept thinking of more and more I needed to add to the post, so it became a Celeste's Faves thing instead. These videos are clearly in violation of rule #4, but I think we gave up on most of the rules awhile ago. Like posting daily. Uh, no. Sorry.
Anyways, this is off the album Scary Monsters, and was apparently (at the time) the most expensive video ever made.
